Dutchman in New York

Studio “Focus Features”, the company of Oprah Winfrey’s “Harpo Productions” and office of Sam Mendes “Neal Street Productions”, uniting efforts to postpone to the big screen the novel by Joseph O’Neill «Netherland», acknowledged by the criticism as one of the best books of last year. Adaptation will make Christopher Hampton ( “Atonement”), director’s chair is likely to take himself Mendes.

The protagonist of the novel – Dutch financier, which moved to New York. Settling in Manhattan, the Dutchman has witnessed the changes, that have occurred in New York after Sept. 11, along the way experiencing discord with his wife. Soon, he finds friendship with several immigrants (among which the personality come across quite extraordinary), suddenly keen on cricket, and unexpectedly friends, along with a new passion, helping him to cope with personal problems.

Producing a screen version will take Mendes, Winfrey, Pippa Harris and Kate Forte. Date of filming and the film’s release has not yet determined.
