Financial instability of the studio “MGM”, which in September, was on the verge of bankruptcy, may haunt their best series of James Bond: the preparatory period of the twenty-third film of the franchise got suspended indefinitely.
The key to the problems is the fact that “MGM” is listed for payback of $ 3.5 billion, to repay which the studio executives have hoped, due to persuading the shareholders to abandon the dividends for 2010 year. However the shareholders have voted against that, but the studio managed to attract funding for “The Hobbit” and to suspend the debt payments for some time. For now, however, things are going in the sad way.
In the interview in a new issue of the journal “Total Film” the producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have stated that in the connection with the current situation, they will have a new schedule, and the future is uncertain. Here, of course, we should take into account the fact that this interview was made at least one and half month ago – even a new issues are going with a decent temporary reserve. Nevertheless, in late December the Bond’s screenwriter Peter Morgan has said the same thing – the preparatory period is suspended, while the studio is looking for money.
For sure no one will fire Bond. Broccoli and Wilson are working with the scriptwriters; Morgan calls the plot as “shocking”, and the studio “Sony Pictures” will not allow the series to fall into the wrong hands. But is that means that the picture will be released in 2011 year? It seems that everything will depend on the progress of “The Hobbit” and the diplomats of “MGM”.
