The director of the “District 9″ will begin shooting of his second picture in the middle of next year. His new picture will be funding “Media Rights Capital”. The project doesn’t have title yet, but we know that the director will not deviate from the usual genre.
The new film will be based on a graphic novel, which wrote Neill Blomkamp himself. At this time, the director will work without the support of Peter Jackson, under the patronage of who he has shot his film about the aliens in Johannesburg. Therefore “Media Rights Capital” gives carte blanche for Blomkamp: the director will have full freedom of creativity.
Neill himself says on this subject: “MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here,” Blomkamp told to Variety. “The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me.” Also he has stated: “It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from District 9, but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm.”
Blomkamp immediately proceeds to write the script and the makes preparations for special effects, which promise to be a key element of the project. The film by the standards of science fiction will have a modest budget, but it will exceed indecently modest 30 million USD, which was worth “District 9″, which gathered in the global box office 184,5 million USD.
“I’m not interested in shooting expensive film – admits the director. – I hope that I get a unique project, largely reflecting me.” Neill Blomkamp promises to make a mix of genres, as well as in his debut, but overall, nothing like the “District 9″. In Summer at ComicCon Neill has said about his new project: “The plot is original, I created it by myself. The action takes place on another planet. And it is very cruel. Very.”
