The film purports to be based on actual events, and is set in Nome, Alaska, a town which the movie mentions has had a disproportionate number of reported missing people and alien abductions over the last forty years, supported by archived footage. Milla Jovovich plays the part of psychotherapist Dr. Abigail Tyler, whom the movie states is based on a real psychologist who videotapes interviews with the abductees, and begins to suspect a government cover up.
